Summary of Discussion forum on Public Disclosure and Environmental Performance Rating
envis
The participants in the discussion fora were representatives from the industry and organisations/consultancies offering environmental services. Industries from the manufacturing sectors as under participated:

Steel
Paper
Pharmaceutical and
Distillery

Service sector like IT and environmental consultancies showed keen interest. Highlights of the feedback:

More than 80% of the 25 participants felt that 'Public Disclosure of Environmental Performance Rating' helps the industry improve environmental performance & control pollution. Almost all of them were keen on participating in such programmes.

Increasing the frequency of such programmes and making them sectoral has been widely voted. Highlighting the sectoral best practices through these ratings has also been suggested.

An interesting suggestion was to conduct a cost benefit analysis between the environmental budgets and the level of pollution controlled. Also compare the overall company budgets with budget allocated for environment.

Government support is essential to percolate the effort nationwide.

Such programs have been supportive of sustainable development in developing countries.

Smaller enterprises with higher pollution load should be targeted.

Most companies were enthusiastic about participating in these rating programs though the smaller ones were little doubtful about being compared with the bigger companies and getting bad ratings in the bargain.

Several participants responded that building awareness about the Environmental Performance Ratings is essential.
