CII - CIDA Environmental Management Project - Phase 2
The Environment Management Division (EMD) of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is implementing a project on 'Environmental Management' along with Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). This project seeks to assist the CII-EMD in its efforts to participate, raise awareness, and promote cooperation in the development of environmental policies for Indian industry. The Phase I of the CII - Environment Management Project (EMP) has been successfully completed. The purpose of the CII-EMP phase-I was to "strengthen the capacity of CII-EMD to catalyze the adoption of environmentally sustainable development practices by industry". Phase-I has provided CII-EMD staff with the basic technical facilities and knowledge required to address various environmental issues such as hazardous waste management, contaminated sites remediation, occupational health & safety, environmental auditing and ISO 14000- Environment Management Systems (EMS).

| The project has also served as a mechanism to engage industry and government in dialogue in these areas. The success of the CII-EMP phase-I and the pressure (national as well as international) on Indian Industry to combat their 'Global Environmental Impacts' motivated CII to take up this project further. Given this situation, CII-EMD requested CIDA to support the second phase of the CII-Environment Management Project (EMP). The phase II of the EMP is at the inception stage with the goal of contributing to CII's capacity to promote environmentally sustainable development. The over all purpose of the project is to increase the Implementation of Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Initiatives with in Indian Industry and Central/State Governments to achieve "Sustainable Development". |
The project's principal partner from India will be the CII-EMD, with the Department of Industrial Policy Promotion (DIPP) and the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF). The Canadian Executing Agency for CII-EMP Phase II is SNC Lavalin, Canada. SNC-Lavalin is one of the leading engineering and construction firms in the world, and a key player in the ownership and management of the infrastructure providing project management and project financing services to a variety of industry sector.
The CII-EMP will result in increased capacity of Industry to incorporate environmental and social issues in doing business and will enhance knowledge of state and central government to develop/implement policy in key areas of environmental and social practices. The Canadian Executing Agency will manage Canadian assistance/training on various issues including Corporate Sustainability Management System (CSMS), Public-Private-Partnership (PPP), Market Based Instruments (MBIs) and other social issues. |
