Sustainability Summit: Asia - 2006 Promoting Excellence for Sustainable Development

(19 - 20 December 2006)
ITC Hotel Maurya Sheraton & Towers, New Delhi

Production and consumption patterns of societies across the world have already stretched the earth's carrying capacity to its limits. The global community is learning to address the challenges of pollution and health risks, global warming and climate change. While wealth is being generated at an unprecedented pace and lifestyles improving, there are still over a billion people who survive on less than a dollar a day.

This contradiction is starkly visible in Asia, which is home to some of the fastest growing economies as well as some of the poorest communities in the world. Experts believe that if the current scenario continues, Asia can neither attain the production and consumption levels of developed economies nor sustain the economic and social gains made over the last three decades.

For over two decades, the global community has been experimenting with the concept of sustainable development: that benefits not only the economy, but also the environment and - above all - the people, in the present and future generations. While several pioneering and promising initiatives are available, the vast majority of them are not replicable or scaleable.

Most initiatives have tended to confine themselves within their constituencies of government, business or civil society. There is a dearth of enabling mechanisms for concerned stakeholders to pursue excellence for sustainable development at meaningful scales. This calls for a new dynamics of partnerships - among the public, the private and the peoples sectors.

With this backdrop, the Confederation of Indian Industry and Development Alternatives have embarked on an annual Sustainability Summit to create an enabling platform for stakeholders in Asia to foster a better balance among the basic prerequisites of sustainable development: social equity, environmental quality and economic efficiency.

Purpose

The primary goal of the annual Summit is to promote excellence for sustainable development. Each year the Summit will focus on a germane theme and experiences shared will serve as a benchmark for others to replicate. Partnerships forged among business, civil society and governments during and after the event will enable scaling-up of promising initiatives.

More specifically, the successive Summits will provide a platform to:

Stimulate dialogue on the emerging challenges and possible responses
Showcase and recognize best practices
Share experiences and facilitate transfer of technology
Establish partnerships among diverse constituencies
Foster regional cooperation among stakeholders in Asia

Participants

The Summit is expected to attract a wide range of participants from among Academia, Banks & Financial Institutions, Civil Society, Consultants, Corporates, Development Cooperation Agencies, Educational Institutions, Environmentalists, Central & State Governments - Policy makers & Regulators, Media, Multilateral & Bilateral agencies, Research Institutes, Technocrats.

he Framework

The Summit is designed as a two day event including plenary, working group, and panel discussion sessions. A state in India and a country in Asia will have the opportunity each year to showcase their sensitivity and responsiveness to the challenges of sustainable development. The programme will also include an awards ceremony to recognize individual and collective efforts in promoting excellence. The Summit this year will launch "India Sustainability Watch" - an initiative to monitor progress towards sustainability.

Focus

The Sustainability Summit: Asia 2006 will focus on 'Mining' & 'Innovation'. The summit will have a Partner Indian State and Partner Asian Country. The event is scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday, 19 - 20 December 2006 at ITC Hotel Maurya Sheraton & Towers, New Delhi.
